ABSTRACT:

Waste is any substance that is not useful. Bio-medical waste (BMW) is any kind of waste containing infectious material. Inappropriate and inadequate handling of health care waste has serious public health issues and significant influence on environment1.The present study was aimed to determine the level of knowledge regarding biomedical waste management among house keeping workers in Pondicherry institute of medical sciences Hospital at Puducherry. Descriptive cross-sectional study was adopted in this study. A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among housekeeping workers. A total of 50 housekeeping workers included in the study were selected using simple random sampling technique. The structured knowledge questionnaires were used regarding biomedical waste management among House keeping workers. Among 50 Participants 70% had inadequate knowledge, 26% had average knowledge and 4% had adequate knowledge. There was no association between the knowledge selected socio demographic variables. The current study recommended that they have to be educated about the biomedical waste management among house keeping workers2.

INTRODUCTION:

Waste management is one of the essential health measures in public. Medical sciences are no exception in the generation of waste. Modern medical institution have succeeded in developing new technologies to save lives, but the techniques for the removal of biomedical waste were overlooked and failed to improve4. The present study was aimed to assess Knowledge on Biomedical waste management among housekeeping workers in Pondicherry institute of medical sciences, Puducherry.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A Descriptive Study to Assess Knowledge Regarding Biomedical Waste Management among housekeeping workers in Pondicherry institute of medical sciences Hospital at puducherry.

OBJECTIVES:

1.     To assess the level of knowledge regarding biomedical waste management among house keeping workers.

2.     To identify the association between the knowledge of housekeeping workers regarding biomedical waste management with socio-demographic variables.

HYPOTHESIS:

There is a significant association between knowledge regarding biomedical waste management among house keeping workers and selected socio-demographic variables

Data regarding demographic characteristics age, gender, educational. Qualification, years of experience in PIMS, source of information, any previous history of injury, in service education attended, and knowledge regarding biomedical waste management using a structured questionnaire was obtained. The continuous variable like age were summarized by mean and standard deviation. The categorical variables like gender education, years of experience were summarized as frequency and proportion. To compare the difference of demographic variables with knowledge categories chi-square test was used5.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION:

Majorities (70%) of the study participants were having inadequate knowledge on biomedical waste management and 26% were having moderately adequate knowledge and 4% were having adequate knowledge regarding biomedical waste management.

Knowledge level on biomedical waste management among housekeeping workers

CONCLUSION:

The study was done to assess the level of knowledge on biomedical waste management among housekeeping workers in PIMS, puducherry. The result had revealed that the overall knowledge level on biomedical waste management was very low among housekeeping workers.
